I arrived on Oahu a couple weeks ago and my favorite Canadian bred, North Shore dwelling, kickass yogi surfer girl Kelsey picked me up and said, “Here’s the plan! We’re going to go grab some tea at Coffee Gallery, watch the sunset, go to my FAVORITE yoga class at 6:30 – it will kick your ass – then get thai food for dinner!” I was down (dog) but “Kels,” I said, “I haven’t done yoga in 6 months. This ain’t gonna be pretty…”
So off we went to Funky Flow, where I did indeed get my yoga ass kicked (to the sound of some fun, groovy beats) and OH, did I ever feel FUNKYYYYY the next morning. I’ve been working on a ranch for six months, wearing boots nonstop and hauling, lifting, moving, running every day until the cows came home (hehe). I left the ranch with bigger biceps but my core is totally shot. I got out of bed the next morning and could barely walk. “Thank you Kels, you’re a good friend,” I moaned.
I devoted the next two weeks in Hawaii to a whole lot of yoga. I did a wicked, intimate restorative class with former pro surfer Rochelle Ballard at her Surf into Yoga studio. I did my own yoga on the beach, I went back to Funky Flow with Kelsey. I ran a ton and went on a lot of looooooong beach walks (Oh HEY calf muscles). I cleared out a lot of shit in my head. My muscles ACHED every day. I felt like my body was yelling at me when I attempted certain poses in class, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING??” Frustrating? Oh hell yes.
I returned home to B.C and hit up some more yoga with my bestie Christine at YYoga in Vancouver. The new Kitsilano studio is A-MAZ-ING. We rocked a few days of much needed Hatha classes and went on some–Beautiful B.C–Massive Tree–Mountain–Ocean–Freshest Air Ever–Did we really get to grow up here?!—hikes in West Van and Squamish.
So this rusty yoga chick is ready to get back in practice and I thought there is no better way to do that then conquer a goal and complete a 30 day Yoga Challenge. They say it takes 30 days to fully develop a new habit or get rid of an unwanted one. There’s a TED talk here about that subject, if you’re interested.
I am committing to 30 consecutive days of yoga (most of which will be hot, since the closest studio to where I’m living right now is a hot yoga studio).
Today was Day 1 of the challenge and consequently I’ve decided my theme for Week 1 will be…………..PATIENCE 🙂
While I’m at it, I thought I will also commit to writing on my blog for 30 consecutive days as well. In whatever way that manifests, I promise there WILL be words in my little corner over here every day!
DISCLAIMER: There may be a lot of writing about yoga in the next 30 days 🙂
Here we go!
Hi Rosalyn,
Are you making up your 30 day challenge or going with someones program? Great idea for creating new habits. I tend to do a little yoga daily and then more when I feel the need but probably need to add some poses as a sort of challenge.
I like you blog,
Steve
